Give your Carpet a Spring Clean with Our Handy Tips

Posted on: 18th March 2015

Easter bank holiday is not too far away now, so a spring clean before the family come round may well be on the top of your to-do list. Although there are many professional carpet cleaning companies out there who could do a remarkable job, we have some simple tips and advice to get your carpet looking as good as new for your guests. One of the best ways of making sure your carpets are as fresh as a daisy is by using a carpet cleaner, a great investment for avid cleaners out there!

Top 5 tips to achieving professional carpet cleaning results

  • Dry vacuum: Before you start cleaning your carpets with your chosen carpet cleaner, it's always a good idea to vacuum over your carpets first. Even if you've recently vacuumed, it never hurts to quickly go over the area again. By doing this, it will help remove any solid dust and debris that you carpet cleaner isn't designed to collect. This is best done with a powerful vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush bar; this will remove debris from deep within the pile. Vacuuming gives your carpet cleaner the chance to remove dirt and stains from as much of the carpet pile as possible.
  • Pre-treating stubborn stains: Whether this is the first time you've cleaned your carpet or you have high traffic areas within your home that haven't been cleaned for quite some time, chances are there is going to be a lot of dirt and stains embedded within your carpets. Long lasting stains often need an extra little push to loosen from your carpets before your carpet cleaner can completely remove them. Using a 'pre-treatment' product is the best option as it will help loosen stubborn stains and lift them from the carpet. Simply add the pre-treatment to the stubborn stains and continue with your carpet cleaning.
  • Slow and steady wins the race: Once you've got your carpet cleaner out and have filled the clean water tank with water and solution, you're ready to carpet clean. When you begin, try to push and pull your carpet cleaner steadily. A good guide is to clean at half the speed you would use your vacuum cleaner at. Doing this gives the water jets in your carpet cleaner a chance to push liquid deep into your carpet pile, and for the brushes to help loosen dirt and stains.
  • Switch up the direction of cleaning: To ensure you clean your entire carpet evenly, vary the direction of your clean and overlap each 'pass'. Giving you thorough coverage of your carpet. Try to avoid cleaning in side by side 'strips', as you don't want a striped finish to your carpets. Another useful tip is to begin your carpet cleaning as far away from the door to a room as possible, doing so means you can work backwards towards the door, meaning you don't have to step on the area you've just cleaned.
  • Rinse your carpet: Once you've finished carpet cleaning with your water and solution mix, it's always a good idea to rinse your carpet. Depending on what carpet cleaner you choose, you may have a rinse mode, if not, you can simply swill the clean water tank and fill with plain, lukewarm water. Go over the carpet in the same way as you did to clean, collecting the plain water.

We understand the importance of making sure your carpets are clean and fresh for your family and friends and hope these tips have helped you. A carpet cleaner is a great investment and can be found in many high street shops.
