Flooring for Wet Rooms: Tile vs Vinyl

Posted on: 25th August 2017Modern shower room

Thinking about installing a wet room? You’ll have a number of different things to consider, including: layout, style, heating and flooring. A wet room is essentially a fully waterproofed bathroom. The floors and walls are “tanked” (sealed with waterproof materials) and a sloped floor will usually drain away excess water-flow. Due to the nature of the wet room, the flooring is an especially important feature. In this week’s blog, we consider two options: vinyl and non-porous tiling.

Non-Porous Tiles

This accessible bathroom style has become a popular way to add luxury to a home. Porcelain and ceramic tiles may be the first materials that spring to mind, when considering bathroom flooring, as a tiled bathroom floor can appear lavish. Porcelain is impervious to water, however some minus points to consider however are:

  • Tile can be slippery and cold.
  • Tile can chip easily.
  • Tile is less “family-friendly”.
  • Tile grouting will require extra careful cleaning.

Vinyl Floors

A wet room is a stylish and practical choice of bathroom. If you want a flooring to match, then you’ll find luxury vinyl tiles and vinyl flooring available in a range of stylish designs, including wood and stone effect. Some other reasons to consider vinyl flooring are:

  • Vinyl is a highly durable material
  • Vinyl is easy to keep clean.
  • Vinyl is softer, therefore preferable for homes with children or elderly people.
  • Vinyl is available in a wide range of styles.
  • Luxury vinyl tiles work well with underfloor heating.
  • Vinyl is affordable and offers good value for money.
  • Vinyl can be provided in slip-resistant forms, making it perfect for wet rooms.
