We Brits love our dogs. Increasingly, we want our pets to be in the warm house with us, not sleeping in the shed. If the dogs had a say in it, we’re pretty certain that they would recommend that you installed the plushest carpet going. After all, they are going to be lying on it most of the day. However, unless you want to be hoovering up dog hair morning and afternoon, you might want to consider some of these dog-friendly floorings.
Vinyl
Vinyl is great for man and beast. It’s a kitchen favourite because you can quickly clean up behind messy eaters – whether they have four legs or two. Similarly, any hair that is being shed can be easily swept up. A vinyl floor is durable, so it will also stand up to any unclipped nails. The pets like it because it is warm and has a give to it.
Wood
A hardwood floor is probably a bad idea when you are still house-training your puppy. The concentration of uric acid in dog micturition is sufficient to permanently stain a hardwood floor. Once your dog is a bit older, provided you keep his nails trimmed, you should be fine with a hardwood floor. Softer woods like pine scratch easily. So, unless you like the scuffed look, best avoid if you have a big dog.
Carpets
Vinyl or wood are probably best for the main areas that your dog will be using (especially underneath his food and water bowls). When choosing a carpet for other areas of the house, be aware that your crafty dog will probably sneak in as soon as your back is turned. Choose darker colours and harder-wearing fabrics with a high nylon content and you should be able to clean up and disguise any accidents.
