The company Alternative Flooring, who manufacture the natural flooring that we supply and fit, are the first flooring company to be accredited by CoolBrand. They are a young company with a focus on ethical and sustainable flooring materials. Let’s answer some of the frequently asked questions about one of their most popular natural floorings: seagrass.
What is Seagrass?
Seagrass is grown in flooded meadows on the banks of Vietnamese rivers. This tropical plant is hand harvested and woven into a tough durable carpet.
Is Seagrass Suitable for any Room?
Seagrass is suitable for any room in the house. Seagrass is the most durable of the natural fibre carpets, so it can stand up to the constant footfall of high traffic areas such as your lounge and hallway.
Is Seagrass Hard to Clean?
As with all natural carpets, you should avoid water saturation cleaning methods as these can cause shrinkage. Dry shampoos are therefore best for cleaning your seagrass carpet. Regular vacuuming will increase the life of your seagrass flooring. Spills should be blotted up with a clean cloth immediately and then treated with a dry carpet cleaner. Following up this process with a thorough vacuuming should prevent staining.
What Colours are Available?
Unlike some other natural fibres, seagrass is not bleached or dyed. It starts out as a golden yellow or dark green (depending on the time of year the seagrass was harvested) and the colour changes naturally as your carpet matures. Seagrass carpets are available in a number of different weaves - basketweave and herringbone are especially popular.
