Creating a home or business environment that’s good for the environment is a goal for most people these days as the impact that our everyday lives have upon the planet becomes ever more evident. Here at Reform we can help you choose a floor that’s sustainably sourced, insulating and recyclable – as well as being good-looking and durable of course! We use responsible suppliers with proactive environmental policies. Many of them have UK factories which reduces the impact of transportation. We also work with recycling centres to recycle or repurpose your old flooring when we take it up, sending little to no waste to landfill.
What’s the most eco-friendly floor?
While we can’t say definitively that one floor is better than another for the environment – we need to factor in a wide range of variables: the sustainability of the material, the production cycle, transportation emissions, duration of use and recyclability. However, it is highly likely that Marmoleum by Forbo takes the number one spot. Made from 97% raw materials, 72% of which are rapidly renewable and 43% of which are recycled content. Marmoleum is also 100% biodegradable, made in UK factories powered by 100% renewable electricity, and contains zero phalates, plasticisers or mineral oils. Available in more than 300 colours and more than 12 different structures, it’s an incredibly versatile choice that suits kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, dining rooms and due to its hygienic and durable qualities is often used in healthcare and education environments.
Close Runners Up!
It may surprise you to learn that vinyl is now one of the most environmentally friendly options around! Made with sustainable practices, many containing recycled content and all fully recyclable after use, vinyl also lasts a long time – Tarkett offer up to a 20-year guarantee! Since 2009 we’ve been working with Recofloor who recycle old vinyl floors as part of an industry wide commitment to a circular economy.
Wool carpets are also great green choice. Wool is a sustainable, natural resource that’s incredibly insulating, providing greater energy efficiency once its laid, and recyclable and biodegradable too. We use suppliers with great credentials, Brintons are the largest user of British wool in the UK, supporting a number of environmental organisations like the Prince of Wales’ Campaign for Wool.
