5 Ways to Stop Your Christmas Tree from Ruining the Floor

Posted on: 8th December 2016

There’s nothing like a real Christmas tree. The smell of the pine is sure to get you in the festive spirit, and a fake one just isn’t the same. However, if you’ve had one before, you’ll know that pine needles and water can ruin your floor. Here are our tips to save your floor this Christmas.

1. Choose Your Tree Carefully.

There are many different kinds of evergreen tree that are sold at Christmas, and some shed their needles more than others. Ask the retailer for advice about which type of tree would be best before you buy.

2. Protect Your Carpets.

If you have carpets – especially if you have deep carpets – a Christmas tree and its stand can leave weight marks behind when you remove it in the New Year. To prevent this from happening, place the tree on top of a sturdy piece of plywood. Use wrapping paper to hide the wood and stand.

3. Prevent Scratches.

Tree stands, like other heavy objects, can easily scratch hardwood floors. Place a non-skid mat underneath it to save the floor – and take extra care when you’re bringing the tree into the house!

4. Water Your Tree Every Day.

Christmas trees need to be watered daily – and you might be surprised at how much water they need. Cutting half an inch off the trunk will make it easier to water. Without adequate water, the tree will dry out and its needles will shed faster. If you’re worried about accidental spills, place plastic sheeting underneath the tree.

5. Remove Dropped Pine Needles.

Regular vacuuming should pick up most needles that have fallen onto the floor, but sometimes stubborn needles get lodged into the carpet or between the slats of a wooden floor. Using a narrow vacuum attachment or duct tape is the best way to get them out.
