These days there are seemingly endless options for flooring. The huge range in types of carpets available can seem daunting to choose from. Even if you know you want a soft but hardwearing carpet – how do you know whether to go for pure wool, nylon or a blend? We’ve put together this handy guide to help you decide.
Pure Wool
100% wool carpets are soft and luxurious, giving a wonderful feeling underfoot. A practical choice too, wool is highly insulating, keeping your home warm and quiet. Wool is also durable, fire retardant and resistant to staining. As they are naturally anti-static, wool carpets pick up less dust. An eco-friendly choice, wool is a sustainable fibre, recyclable, biodegradable and supports British farmers.

80:20 Wool Nylon Blend
The most common fibre blend with all the benefits of wool and the added durability of nylon. The synthetic fibres that constitute 20% of the carpets makes cleaning easier. Pure wool has to be professionally cleaned, but these blends often contain an added stain resistant coating. An 80:20 blend is often more affordable than pure wool with a very similar look and feel, but available in a wider range of colours and patterns.

Pure Nylon/Synthetic Fibre
Stain-resistant and extremely hardwearing, synthetic fibres are a great choice for families and for areas that receive a lot of traffic – such as hallways, offices and stairs. Nylon (polyamide) and polypropylene blends are soft, easy to clean and durable. Both are soft fibres, polypropylene will dent under furniture or weight, while Nylon doesn’t flatten as easily and will spring back.
