Caring For Your New Floor Covering

Posted on: 14th November 2014

Wood floors are popular among homeowners due to their beauty and longevity - in many instances they can last for generations if cared for correctly. Let's face it, if you are spending hundreds if not thousands on a new floor covering for your home you want it to continue looking as good as new for as long as possible.

To give your flooring the best possible protection there are a number of simple things you can do to look after it and maintain its high quality finish.

Cleaning

  • Sweeping: Taking the time to brush and sweep your floor can help to prevent a build-up of dirt and grime – something that will often cause discolouration.
  • Clearing: If you are considering washing your floor be sure to only use floor cleaners that have been recommended by the manufacturer and be sure not to put too much fluid on it.
  • Spills: Soak up any spillages immediately. When water soaks into wood, especially laminate flooring, it can cause it to swell and the edges of the board to rise up.

Protection

  • Covers: If your flooring is in a room or area of the home that is subject to high levels of footfall, you may want to consider using a door mat to protect the floor from grit and grime.
  • High Heels: The pressure caused by high heels can create indentations in your flooring that can be difficult to repair. As people wearing shoes of this kind to remove them if possible.
  • Sunlight: When exposed to direct sunlight the colour of wood flooring can change. Do not place rugs or mats in front of windows to avoid this occurring.
