Cleaning Vinyl Flooring: Our Handy Tips

Posted on: 25th February 2015

If, like many households you have sleek and smooth vinyl flooring in your home you may be seeking some useful tips on how to clean them. Vinyl flooring may be new to you so it's important to learn how to protect and clean your floors. To help you achieve sparkling clean vinyl flooring we have some handy tips and advice for you to take on board.

Our Handy Tips

  1. Buy a doormat: A doormat helps keep out dirt and chemicals. Bringing dirt into your house means more broom time and grit acts like sandpaper, removing the lovely finish from your floor. Although you may not see them but chemicals like asphalt can stick to your shoes and then to the floor, causing it yellow.
  2. Maintaining your floors: The key is to make sure you keep your vinyl flooring clean by cleaning it on a regular basis. Get rid of the dirt before it gets embedded into your floor as you vinyl will then last longer. Sweeping frequently is also a good way of keeping your floors clean; doing this with a soft broom across the kitchen floor every evening after dinner is always a good idea.
  3. Learn low-impact cleaning techniques: It may be hard to resist but try not to blast away dirt with heavy-duty cleaners. Instead, clean your vinyl flooring with the mildest cleaner you can find. Sweep or vacuum your floors every evening and wipe up any spills straight away. To get rid of the dirt your broom or vacuum can't quite reach, use a damp mop with warm water. If all else fails, you can use a soap which is designed for your flooring.
  4. Don't overdo it: Water from an overly wet mop will work its way into the cracks, seams or edges. Once in there, water can destroy the glue bond that holds down the vinyl, causing it to come loose or corners to curl.
  5. Give your furniture or large appliances 'feet': The weight of heavy items that are permanent fixtures of a room such as a dining room table can dent vinyl flooring. Prevent these dents by fitting your furniture with floor protectors.

With these useful tips, you can maintain your vinyl flooring and keep it looking brand new.
