Your floor is in constant use. We walk around on it all day. The kids wrestle on it. Drinks are spilt on it. Heavy furniture is dragged across it. Hardwearing flooring can take some of the constant battering we give it - but that’s not enough. A floor also needs maintaining. If you’re feeling like a little spring cleaning, here are our floor maintenance tips.
Wood Floor Maintenance Tips
When it comes to wood flooring, you want to avoid unsightly scratches. We don’t want to sound like the shoe police, but avoid stilletto heels as they can leave marks on a hardwood floor. The plastic coasters you find underneath sofas and divan beds are another enemy of the hardwood floor - you can purchase rubber guards to sit the coasters on or lay down a mat. Exposure to sunlight will naturally change the colour of your wood over time. Some people like this effect. If you don’t, invest in curtains and soft interior lighting.
Carpet Maintenance Tips
The most important thing you can do to maintain your carpet is to enforce a ‘shoes off at the front door’ policy. Failing that, buy a sturdy doormat and make sure people (including children!) use it. Regular hoovering is a must to maintain your carpet and every couple of years you should consider having high traffic areas professionally cleaned.
Vinyl Floor Maintenance Tips
A regular sweep and mop will keep a vinyl floor in good condition. Obviously don’t put anything hot on the floor – we hope you avoided stray pancakes on Shrove Tuesday!
