Interior Design Trends: 2016 So Far

Posted on: 21st April 2016

We like to stay on top of the latest developments in interior design here at Reform Flooring. Looking at the latest interior design trends can give you some great ideas for giving your home a contemporary feel when the time is right for redecorating – and flooring is, of course, an integral part of any room makeover. The overall theme of 2016 is contrast. This can be expressed in all sorts of ways: old and new, spots and stripes, plain and pattern. Here are three of the interior design trends making a splash this year.

Words and Letters

Remember ‘Live Laugh Love’? There was a time when inspirational messages adorned everything from coasters to framed prints. Happily, those days quickly passed and fans of WordArt adopted the wordcloud instead. The word is being passed over in favour of the letter this year. Expect to see single large letters on cushions and rugs.

Vintage with a Modern Twist

We should have seen this one coming. The resurgence of the moustache was an obvious foreshadowing of this trend for all things vintage, with a modern twist. In the living room, it this interior design trend is manifesting itself as modern metallic paintwork, coppers and brushed gold, and vintage floral prints on the upholstery or curtains. In the kitchen, modern and vintage is vinyl flooring with restored oak worktops and a Belfast sink. In the bathroom, lipstick shades make up a tiled feature panel as a backdrop to a vintage rolltop bath.

Pastel Shades and Black

When it comes to interior design, you have to know what you’re doing with black. You want to avoid the ‘teenager’s bedroom’ look. That being said, at the beginning of the year, at Europe’s biggest interior design show in Paris, one of the emergent themes was dramatic black paired with popular pale shades such as dusty jade and mustard yellow. (Another emergent theme was the kitsch giant plastic dinosaur coffee table, but that one didn’t quite catch on). A dark floor and pale walls can give a room a feeling of depth.
